As we breathe gently of summer

With cotton clouds drifting over us in azure blue


Flowers entwined with loving care

Whispering grasses seed and fade

As players tread on eternal steps

In fleeting earthly life, beheld

Vineyards rich with fruit

Are bathed in Eden's birdsong

Chattering leaves danced to their death in the gusts of autumn wind, Wending their pathway to eternity perhaps As they sighed and fluttered their last breath under the dying embers of a waning sun. They whispered in excitement while they were dancing in anticipation of what was yet to come.   Cold, rainy tears dripped from forlorn trees, Bare with longing for the gaiety of their leaves Now lost to winter’s creeping frosts.   Poetry is…. The ohhh much travelled word, written in response to Stephen Fry's 'The Ode Less Travelled'. Poetry is the Ionian sea and mountains The sweaty chef, on a furtive break, smoking at sunset Leaning, silhouetted against the orange sky. Poetry is the vineyards with slowly ripening fruit That mellows into wine As the seasons flow. Poetry is words placed randomly and wanton Defiantly tumbling into existence On a page of paper or a device made overseas. Poetry is the language of the soul The discord of the struggle The expression of the flawed Trying to communicate Life’s cliched tapestry Poetry is words that rebel against the rules Of time and space and death and limitation Of a world made of molecules  And scientific precision. Poetry shouts in the night  When all are asleep  And whispers live to the full on a dull and dreary day. There are those that write poetry Those that ignore it Those that read it  And then, there are those that live and breathe it...

Sunlight

The Sun adorns the shimmering leaves With a lace dress of gold. Green and gold dance as he weaves Patterns of life untold.   Suspended in the firmament Of earthly dust and flame The leaves tell of Love’s long lament At worldly loss and pain.   Beauty of the leaves cast its Heavenly made design Imbuing with hope as befits Those still entrapped in time.   Sharp light invades my soul Golden pure notes of life Time’s passing shadows toll; Falling leaves cut like ice.   Good death come swiftly now Repay your lover’s lament With a silent heart that no pain Can reach, nor fear can tear from a life So spent. © Iona Waters
